English 読書会
Hello. I’m Davide.
After 10 years of teaching, I’ve noticed a common 'slow burn' of frustration among my most advanced students. You’ve reached a point where news articles and surface-level small talk just aren’t enough anymore. You’ve hit a plateau, and you’re looking for something more substantial.
English 読書会 is a place to find that depth.
Think of it as a cozy space for the mind—a bit like a quiet corner in a London pub. Here, we move past the 'utility' of English and look at its art. We use literature not just to study grammar, but to explore history, etymology, and the stories that shape the language.
It’s about moving away from 'textbook' English and into real, meaningful conversation.
Read deeply. Discuss boldly. Grow together.
Youth Literature
Saturdays 20:00-21:30 JST
World-Building & Maturing Narratives
Designed for teen readers this circle begins with the foundation of modern British imagination. By exploring the first four volumes of the Harry Potter series, we move beyond the "magic" and look at how the English language is used to build complex worlds, developing our vocabulary as the narrative matures from simple wonder to deep, atmospheric prose.
Available Reading Circles
Political Satire & Allegory
Thursdays 20:00-21:30 JST
Rhetoric & Manipulation
Explore how English is used as a powerful tool for social change. We’ll analyze the sharp wit of Animal Farm and A Christmas Carol, alongside the cautionary tales of Fahrenheit 451 and Lord of the Flies. We’ll learn to spot irony, understand allegory, and discuss how words can both hide and reveal the truth.
The Victorian Gothic
Wednesdays 20:00-21:30 JST
Aesthetics & Psychological Descent
Slow down to look at the "DNA" of language. Using the heavyweights—Dorian Gray, Frankenstein, Jekyll & Hyde, and Dracula—we explore "Atmospheric English." We’ll discuss the duality of man and the Victorian obsession with science and the supernatural, all while mastering sophisticated, descriptive prose.
Contemporary Literature
Tuesdays 20:00-21:30 JST
Narrative Voice & Subtext
Tackle the "Plateau" by looking at modern masterpieces. From the unique perspective of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time to the haunting subtext of Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go, we learn to read between the lines. We explore how modern authors use English to discuss identity, memory, and what it means to be human today.
About Davide
My love for English didn’t begin with a textbook; it began with the macabre, rhythmic world of Edgar Allan Poe. I still remember that first spark of wonder—the way a single short story could shift the entire atmosphere of a room. From that moment, I was hooked.
Throughout school, while others saw literature as a chore, it was my sanctuary. I wasn’t just studying for the top marks I eventually earned; I was genuinely lost in the worlds these authors created.
This early fascination led me to study English language and literature in college, where I achieved top grades before continuing my academic journey at university, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Theology.
During this time I became deeply interested in the way language, philosophy, and literature intersect—how stories allow us to explore complex ideas and human experience through words.
For me, a vacation has always meant a suitcase half-full of books. Whether it’s a sun-drenched afternoon or a silent winter day, there is nothing quite like the feeling of slowing down and stepping inside a story for a few hours.
After years of traditional work in various British cities, I eventually decided to simplify my life. I traded the noise of office life for a small farm in the Portuguese hills. Life here is quieter, grounded in nature, and centred around my ever-growing library.
I realised that the “big questions” I once studied in philosophy and theology are often most alive when we explore them through the lens of a great novel.
Over the past eight years as a professional English teacher, I have worked with learners from around the world, particularly Japanese students.
For the last seven years I have taught with a leading international online education platform, conducting thousands of lessons focused on helping learners develop confidence, clarity, and expressive ability in English.
I am also TEFL qualified, and my teaching experience includes classroom teaching in both Europe and Africa prior to moving fully into online education.
The English Reading Circle grew naturally out of this experience. I wanted to create a space where serious learners could move beyond simple conversation practice and instead experience English as it truly lives—through literature, ideas, and discussion.
In each circle we read novels together slowly and thoughtfully, exploring the language, imagery, themes, and deeper meanings that lie beneath the surface of the text.
Each group is intentionally kept small so that discussions remain relaxed, thoughtful, and genuinely collaborative.
"In a good book, the best is between the lines."

I'm truly impressed by what you said. You have travelled to many countries and experienced their life, climate and character. I'm very curious about your practical experiences. You mentioned you were working for NGO. Next class, I would like to listen to your experiences on the NGO. See you again.

The teacher had a very deep understanding of Japan (he knew about topics from school life, social issues, and even the existence of izakaya bars) Even difficult topics are explained in an easy-to-understand and detailed manner, replacing them with things that are familiar to us. British pronunciation and speaking speed are fast, but listening skills are likely to improve. He is a very wonderful teacher who deepens the topics he shares from a different perspective than himself.

I learn and enjoy it every time, but last time it was a divine time. By chance, we ended up talking about our characteristics, and we had a lot in common, which was very exciting. It makes me feel very positive. Thank you for meeting me.

Common Enquiries
What exactly is English 読書会?
More than just a book club, it is a sanctuary for deep literary exploration. We go beyond the 'utility' of English to uncover the art, history, and cultural DNA found between the lines of classic and contemporary masterpieces.
What English level is required?
I recommend a level equivalent to Eiken Grade 1 or IELTS 7.5+. Our focus is not on grammar points, but on using your high-level English to navigate complex themes and sophisticated prose with confidence.
What happens if I miss a session?
If you have to miss a week, you won't fall behind. After every session, I provide a detailed written recap of the main themes, insights, and questions the group discussed. Combined with your weekly reading guides and vocabulary sheets, you will have everything you need to understand the chapters. Plus, you can always share your thoughts and catch up with everyone in our daily LINE/WhatsApp chat!
Do I need to buy the books myself?
Yes, members are responsible for purchasing their own copies of the assigned novels. We highly recommend buying physical paperbacks so you can easily annotate and highlight as you read, though e-readers are perfectly fine too. Some classic texts are also available for free online. We will provide all the supplementary reading guides, vocab sheets, and contextual PDFs!
How much time do I need to dedicate each week?
Our circles are designed for busy adults, so the pace is slow, deep, and manageable. We typically cover about 20 to 30 pages a week. With the help of the provided reading guides and vocabulary cheat sheets, most members spend about 1 to 2 hours reading and preparing before our live session. The goal is to savour the story and read mindfully, not to rush through a textbook!
Who is this community for?
It is designed for advanced Japanese learners who have hit a plateau. If standard articles feel functional but dry, and you crave intellectual depth and meaningful, rhythmic conversation, you will find your place here.
How do the weekly live sessions work?
Members join weekly 90 minute long live sessions via the website. You will also receive curated reading guides and vocabulary cheat sheets, while staying connected through our daily WhatsApp or LINE community groups.
What happens after I join?
You will immediately receive a welcome guide and access to our digital portal. Within 24 hours, you will be invited to your circle’s group chat and receive the full curriculum for the current term.
How many people are in a circle?
To ensure everyone has ample time to speak, share their thoughts, and truly connect with the text, we strictly limit each circle to 7 members. This keeps the conversation deep and allows us to build a genuine, supportive community.
